The Grand Annual was first run on Thursday 13 June 1872. Francis Tozer, Henry Phillips, Samuel Macgregor, Anthony Mackenzie and John Russell Evans were appointed as stewards and laid out a unique steeplechase course over the paddocks adjacent to the racecourse.
